Alcohol consumption is a part of many St. Patrick’s Day celebrations. As a result, from 2009 to 2013, there were 276 St. Patrick’s Day fatalities resulting from drunk driving accidents in the United States.

As you make your party plans for tomorrow’s festivities, put these safety tips in place to protect yourself and others.

Pre-Party Safety Planning

  • Before you leave for a St. Patrick’s Day party, think about how you’ll get home safely. Decide who will act as the sober driver for your group, or if you will take a cab, ride-share or car service. Gather contact numbers before you leave for easy access when needed.
  • Consider taking public transit, cab or ride-share to and from your party to avoid parking your car and leaving it overnight in an unfamiliar area.
  • Leave your valuables at home; bring only the necessities along with you to help prevent theft.
  • If you are hosting a party, you may wish to provide overnight accommodations as an option for guests.

At Your St. Patrick’s Day Celebration

  • Never leave your beverage unattended. Finish your drink before stepping outside or going to the restroom.
  • If you see someone at your celebration who is intoxicated and planning to drive themselves home, step in and help them arrange a safe ride home.

On Your Way Home

  • If you are serving as the sober driver, keep an eye out for intoxicated pedestrians who may ignore traffic lights and crosswalks.
  • If you spot a motorist who appears to be impaired while driving, call law enforcement right away and provide a vehicle description and location.

If you have been injured in a drunk driving accident, a FTW personal injury attorney from Anderson, Cummings & Drawhorn, LLP will fight to hold the responsible driver accountable for the harm they have caused you and work to maximize compensation on your behalf.
