With the goal of improving the safety of the nations roadways, the U.S. Department of Transportation Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) has issued a Final Rule requiring the use of electronic logging devices for commercial trucks and buses within the next two years.

These devices will record hours-of-service data automatically, eliminating the need for costly and often inaccurate paper logs.
Prior to this rule, truck drivers kept written logs of their on-duty and off-duty hours. This method is highly problematic because there is no way to verify the logged information.
With electronic devices in place, driving time data will automatically be recorded. The hours an engine is in operation, the trucks movement, the number of miles traveled, and the location of the truck will all be captured by the logging technology.
The data captured by electronic logging technology will be a great asset in uncovering hours-of-service violations. Safety officials will be able to efficiently review the drivers records to better enforce driver restrictions designed to prevent driver fatigue and save lives.
According to the FMCSA, the implementation of this new technology is estimated to prevent 26 deaths and 562 injuries caused by commercial trucking accidents every year.
These devices will benefit the trucking industry by eliminating expensive paperwork costs. The American Trucking Associations, a trucking industry organization, says the rule will have a positive impact on the industry.
Electronic trucking logs can also help personal injury attorneys build stronger cases in the event of a trucking accident. Electronic logs are not easily manipulated like handwritten logs, providing accurate and verifiable data.
Devastating injuries and death can occur when commercial truckers act negligently. Let the truck accident attorneys in Ft. Worth at Anderson, Cummings & Drawhorn, LLP fight to get you the compensation you deserve.
