Bard G2 and Bard Recovery IVC Filters

The Bard IVC filters are retrievable devices that are placed in the inferior vena cava (IVC) to help prevent blood clots from traveling through the body and reaching vital organs like the lungs, heart or brain. The risk of blood clots is common in patients with deep vein thrombosis or a high risk for pulmonary embolism.

Although the filters are retrievable, once placed, IVC filters are rarely removed, which often leads to IVC filter complications. If pieces of the device migrate to the lungs or heart, it can cause serious injuries and even death.

Manufactured by C.R. Bard, Bard IVC filters have been the target of lawsuits around the country. A variety of lawsuits claim design defects, negligence, manufacturing defects, failure to warn, breach of implied warranty and negligent misrepresentation on the part of Bard and its subsidiary companies.

FDA IVC Filter Warnings

The FDA issued an advisory to doctors and clinicians in August 2010. This advisory recommended that the retrievable IVC filters be removed as soon as protection from pulmonary embolism is no longer needed. The FDA also encouraged physicians to weigh the benefits and risks of a retrievable IVC filter for each patient.

With IVC filter usage increasing during the past thirty years, the FDA received 921 adverse event reports involving IVC filter complications between 2005 and 2010. They include complaints of:

  • 56 filter fractures
  • 70 IVC perforations
  • 146 embolizations
  • 328 device migrations

Bard IVC Filter Complications and Risks

As a result of IVC filter complications, many victims end up in the emergency room experiencing shortness of breath and chest pain. When an IVC filter fails, a CT scan or another type of test can reveal the failure.

Side effects like those listed below require immediate surgery to remove the IVC filter as well as any metal splinters or fragments that have migrated through the body.

  • Hemorrhage
  • Death
  • Perforation of vessels, tissues, and organs
  • Constant anxiety about metal shards in organs
  • Pulmonary embolus
  • Continual severe pain in chest, heart or anywhere
  • Respiratory compromise
