The agreement pays out a base compensation of $300,000. It also provides additional payments up to $600,000 for serious complications, including post-operative infections, the need for additional surgeries, hip dislocations, femur fractures, heart attacks, strokes, lost wages and death.

Stryker Settlement Extension

Unfortunately, the Stryker hip implant devices carried serious risks including reports of unusually high rates of failure.

The defect was linked to metal on metal bearings, which can produce small metallic wear debris or corrosion can take place with the constant movement between the two metal surfaces. Metal toxicity, or metallosis, can lead to severe joint pain, implant failure and deterioration of the bone around the implant.

The company pulled the Rejuvenate and ABG II hip implant devices off of the market in 2012. By then, more than 20,000 of the devices had been implanted in people across the country.

Serious Complications Include:

  • Implant wear and tear (corrosion or fretting)
  • Metallosis (high cobalt and chromium metal ion levels in the blood stream)
  • Severe joint pain
  • Implant failure
  • Implant loosening
  • Local tissue necrosis (tissue around the implant dies)
  • Deterioration of the bone around the implant
