In response to increasing alcohol-related car accidents and fatalities on football game days, the Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) has launched a campaign that seeks to reduce these numbers drastically for the upcoming Super Bowl.

The campaign, Plan While You Can, asks that fans who intend to drink alcohol while at or watching this years Super Bowl game make a plan to act responsibly by arranging for safe transportation home.

TxDOT has also designed a virtual game that simulates the effects of what consuming too many drinks does to a person’s reaction time. The game will be taken on a tour to Wingstop restaurants in Austin, San Marcos, Corpus Christi, Houston and San Antonio.

Wingstop has also donated five $100 gift cards as prizes for a contest, which can be entered to win by using the hashtag #PlanWhileYouCan in a post to any of your social media accounts.

Game Day Drinking Dangers

The state of Texas is home to thousands of football fans who come together on game days in one way or another to cheer on their favorite teams. It’s no secret that during football games, especially during a Super Bowl game, a lot of alcohol is consumed.

There is nothing wrong with having a drink or two while watching the game, but it is never a good idea to irresponsibly place yourself behind the wheel of a car after drinking.

This is something that everyone knows, and yet the statistics show that there was an increase in alcohol-related fatalities in Texas during the 2014 football season compared to the previous year. In total, there were 10,676 alcohol-related accidents and 492 fatalities last year.

Appointing a designated driver, scheduling a taxi to pick you up before you even begin drinking, calling a sober friend or family member to come pick you up, or taking public transportation like the bus home at the end of the night will actually save lives, and it is up to everyone in the state of Texas to do their part.

The consequences of driving while intoxicating can be catastrophic.
