New Urgent Takata Airbag Warning Issued by NHTSA

According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), a subset of high-risk Honda and Acura vehicles has been identified as having an increased risk of a dangerous airbag rupture. The agency is urging vehicle owners to have unrepaired vehicles fixed immediately to avoid injuries and fatalities.

Through testing, the NHTSA has found that certain 2001-2003 Honda and Acura models are at a higher risk than other vehicles included in the Takata airbag recall. There could be a 50 percent chance of rupture upon airbag deployment in these vehicles. Models identified as high-risk include:

  • 2001-2002 Honda Civic
  • 2001-2002 Honda Accord
  • 2002 Honda Odyssey
  • 2003 Honda Pilot
  • 2002-2003 Acura TL
  • 2003 Acura CL

These particular vehicles contain airbags with a manufacturing defect that significantly increases the risk of airbag rupture in the event of airbag deployment during an accident. These high-risk vehicles were initially recalled between 2008 and 2011. While Honda reports that over 70 percent of included vehicles have been repaired, there are around 313,000 more that have not received repairs for this potentially dangerous defect.

Vehicles in areas affected by high humidity levels are also at a greater risk for a rupture risk. In Florida, Texas, certain Gulf Coast areas and Southern California, laboratory testing shows the rupture rate can also be as high as 50 percent.

In efforts to prevent additional fatalities and serious injuries, Honda and the NHTSA are asking for help in locating unrepaired vehicles. The public and news media outlets are urged to spread the word: these vehicle owners should immediately contact the nearest dealer to arrange repairs, at no cost to owners.

By visiting SaferCar.gov, vehicle owners are able to check if their car is a part of any current recalls, including the Takata airbag recall.
