The hailstorm which ripped through Wylie on April 11th damaged nearly 80 percent of homes in the area, leaving approximately 12,000 homes in need of repairs.

Hail as big as softballs fell from the sky, crashing through windows and even roofs, leading to thousands of insurance claims. Three major hailstorms have hit the area in the last month, totaling more than $1 billion in insured losses, according to the Insurance Council of Texas.

Wylie was the hardest hit by the recent storm, though Denton, Collin and Rockwall counties were also hit hard.

According to records, between 2007 and 2015, northern Texas typically averaged 157 reports of strong hail from January to April. This year, the total has already reached 188 reports. The National Weather Service has stated that in 2016, reports of hailstones larger than 2 inches have doubled the average number of reports.

Rebuilding the City of Wylie

The city’s mayor has stated that it will take quite a while to complete the cleanup of Wylie. The public works department will be traveling the city to collect debris cleaned up by homeowners.

Blue tarps can be seen on roofs throughout the city, as well as boarded up windows. Many city buildings were also damaged by the hail, including the 911 dispatch center, as well as the public safety center.

To facilitate the rebuilding process, the city has waved its usual permitting fee, though homeowners will still need to obtain a permit to perform repairs to their homes. Homeowners state it could take months before home repairs are completed.
