Could Head-Up Displays Lead to More Distracted Drivers?

In a tech-driven world, some question if the newest advances in automobile technology are simply more distractions to a driver who is already overloaded with too much information. Specifically, the integration of head-up displays into the everyday automobile may lead to more distracted drivers.

The technology that was once only found in high-end sports cars and used by airline pilots during landing, has found its way into mainstream automobiles. Those selling vehicles already equipped with the technology include Audi, BMW, Cadillac, Lexus and Mercedes.

Head-up displays project information that would normally be found on your dashboard and odometer, like speed, out in front of the driver in their line of vision directly above the dashboard. The text and images are transparent, usually white or a color.

Automakers claim that the technology makes driving safer because drivers no longer need to tilt their head down to look at the dashboard and then refocus on the road.

However, some safety advocates have expressed concerns. Many believe that projecting too much information into a drivers line of vision could be distracting especially if the display is showing iPod playlists and dinner reservations.

The biggest concern among safety advocates is the fact that this area is completely unregulated. One advocate even compared it to the Wild West.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) generally sets forth guidelines and regulations for automakers regarding new technology. However, technology seems to be outpacing the federal regulator. The NHTSA has not yet set forth any guidelines for head-up displays, though it has said that it is investigating the technology and should issue guidelines soon.
