Texas, along with the rest of the country, is expected to see an increase in the number of Americans traveling this Thanksgiving weekend.

According to estimates, 3.9 million Texans will be traveling this weekend, an increase of 160,000 people compared to last year. That is the largest number of Thanksgiving travelers in Texas since 2007.

Meanwhile, the nation as a whole will see a 1.9 percent increase in the number of Thanksgiving travelers compared to last year. According to AAA estimates, 48.7 million Americans will travel this Thanksgiving – the largest number of Thanksgiving travelers since 2007.

The most popular method of travel in Texas and the nation this Thanksgiving will be driving. According to AAA, 43.5 million Americans will travel by car this weekend. Approximately 94 percent of Thanksgiving travelers in Texas will be driving.

AAA attributes the increase in Thanksgiving travel to lower gas prices, rising wages, increased consumer spending and an improved economy. Gas prices this weekend will mark the second-cheapest since 2008.

With so many Americans on the roads this weekend, AAA expects to provide roadside assistance to more than 370,000 motorists. AAA expects the most common issues to be lockouts, flat tires and dead batteries.

That is why AAA advises drivers to carefully inspect their vehicles before hitting the road, making sure tires are fully inflated and batteries are in good condition. Motorists should also stock their vehicles with an emergency kit in case of a breakdown.

AAA also recommends downloading the organization’s free mobile app, available for iPhone, iPad and Android devices. The app allows you to request AAA roadside assistance, find AAA-approved car repair facilities and find the lowest gas prices.
